A recent clinical case from Steven T Richards and Pauline A Richards is presented on the use of Capnography in the treatment of Long COVID-19 and it’s complications. The report is summarised below:
Two patients in their 60s, one male and one female, were diagnosed with Long COVID-19, and self-referred for supportive therapy, with acknowledgement from their medical practitioners. After a full biopsychosocial case history and assessment, they underwent clinical capnography. This uncovered the perseveration of past “ego-ideals” that had contributed as a “drive-state” into chronic exhaustion, prodromal to their infection, and had remained active in maintaining the drive-state fuelled Long COVID-19 condition. Once COVID-19 had established itself, most likely through a depleted immunity arising from chronic exhaustion, their identification with their respective ego “identified-with complex", that they must remain in a state of high-emotional drive in order to maintain performance, which led to their over-riding of their homeostatic competence. In neuropsychoanalytic terms, their SEEKING system had remained in overdrive, and through positive feedback had depleted them sufficiently for Long COVID-19 to take hold. Integrated-management, with medical support, provided a week-long period of sleep therapy to reset the respiratory drive. Psychotherapy involved the use of hetero- and auto-hypnosis to reinforce correct breathing, and the re-framing of the ego ideal (self concept) to include a reflexive acceptance of homeostatic competence. By mid-December 2023, both patients were in recovery.
